Anyone arriving at Casas de Juromenha is welcomed by the Guadiana, which, blue, bright and calm, stretches between Portugal and Spain.
The landscape surrounding the houses is uniquely tranquil. Framed by a bright, calm blue Guadiana, here you can cleanse your soul and body of the stresses of everyday life. Staying at Casas de Juromenha is synonymous with disconnecting from the world and the routine that crushes our days.
Juromenha, strategically located by the River Guadiana and close to the Spanish border, has been known since the 9th century, i.e. before Portuguese rule.
It was an important part of the Caliphate of Córdoba, as a stronghold defending ancient Badajoz. It was conquered from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques, fell and was definitively reconquered for the Portuguese crown.
In 1312, King Dinis ordered the total reconstruction of the fortress, which remained solid until it suffered significant damage caused by the terrible earthquake of 1755, which destroyed part of Lisbon.
In the 20th century, the fortress, which houses several historic buildings, was classified as a building of public interest.
Since 2021, it has been refurbished, initially its walls, but with the aim of continuing to its interior.
